Introducing DankPod…a Serious Waste a Time

January 16, 2005 by Lou in General

If you don’t have an ipod yet, you are so behind the times. I can say this unflinchingly, because a few days ago I bought an ipod mini (silver). As soon as I heard about Apple introducing the ipod shuffle, which functions very much like bic pen taped to a voice recorder, I decided it was time to give in and buy an ipod. I wasn’t going to wait around for them to start putting shuffles into cereal boxes.

An immense amount of labor goes into filling up 4GB of space with music. Especially music that can be listened to while on the go. Certain music just doesn’t combine with walking around. Like I have this Spanish guitar album, and it totally sucked to listen to it while walking. Totally sucked. I can’t imagine having to fill up 20GB and I would curse the day I was born if I had 40GB of free space in my pocket.

So anyway, the point of this post is that ipod has this “Notes” feature and today I figured out a way to convert all of Dank’s archives into files that can read on an ipod. This new (and immediately old) phenomenom is aptly named DankPod, and it probably works with both Mac and PC ipods. But definitely PC. All the posts are archived by year and month. Definitely a great way to waste a crapload of time. I can’t wait to read the Scottie Pippen post tomorrow on the el. I even found some of the lost posts from early 2002, those are on there as well.

DankPod in actionTo install DankPod

  1. Make sure you have an iPod which supports Notes (iPod mini or 3rd Generation iPod or later - most iPods really)
  2. Download the zipped file - Stuffit Expander on the Mac and any zip application on windows will be able to unzip it to a folder called DankPod
  3. Mount your iPod as an external drive via FireWire or USB, just as you would to work with iTunes
  4. Open the Notes folder on your iPod on your PC or Mac - on Windows it will show up in My Computer, on the Mac in the finder sidebar, or in the Computer (use the Finder’s Go Menu to open your “Computer” window)
  5. Drag the unzipped folder into the Notes folder of your iPod
  6. Unmount your iPod and you’re done

To read the posts

  1. From the main menu of your iPod choose Extras
  2. From the Extras menu choose Notes
  3. Choose the entry DankPod
  4. To read any section just scroll to it using the scroll wheel and click to open it

Known bugs in Current Version (v03):

“next/previous” functionality doesn’t really work between months, but using the Menu button is probably easier anyway. A few of the “Continue” links don’t work. Thinking about ways to check for/retrieve new posts on each sync, but that will never happen.

Enjoy. If you find any other problems, let me know.
